California Dreamin’ in the Heart of Warsaw
An interior straight out of a Polaroid
This 43-square-metre flat in Warsaw’s Wola district transports you straight to sunny 1950s and 60s California – a world of martinis, pastel tones and cinematic ease. The Palm Springs design enchants with colour, from a hand-painted sunset-inspired gradient wall to mint green kitchen fronts reminiscent of vintage car palettes. A black-and-white chequered floor, retro-style appliances and carefully crafted details evoke classic American diners and film sets. Though designed as a rental, the apartment has been finished with exceptional care – with integrated air conditioning, cleverly concealed storage and bespoke furniture that combine style with practicality. A little retro, a little cinematic – and very liveable

Pastel tones, quirky illustrations and film references greet you at the door. The creation of interior designer Joanna Grotkowska from Deer Design and furniture designer Anna Garbacz from Deer Wood is a playful take on convention, blending American modernism with a homely feel and a touch of humour. Although the layout of the flat remains unchanged, the creative styling gives it a character all its own.
One of the most striking features in the living area is a hand-painted wall in sunset tones – from vibrant orange to soft pink. More than just a backdrop, it’s the focal point of the entire space, setting the mood and tying the concept together.
“The gradient wall was part experiment, part dream come true. The aim was to create a kind of “real life Instagram filter” – a space where colour alone lifts your spirits.”

Though compact, the kitchen delights with its detailing and the balance it strikes between retro charm and modern convenience. It features plenty of bespoke cabinetry, vintage-look appliances and clever solutions such as Blum systems and a hidden pull-out pantry.
“What brings me the most joy is the kitchen – it’s the cherry on top. On one hand, it’s stylised; on the other, it’s thoroughly modern. And it blends beautifully with the rest of the space. Retro-inspired appliances, pastel cabinetry and delicate mouldings all contribute to the distinctive atmosphere.”

The bathroom, though small, feels airy and stylish. A mix of three tile colours, black accents and a bold orange cabinet front give it a playful, motel-like character with a hint of humour.
The bedroom, by contrast, offers a sense of calm. A padded headboard shaped like a picket fence and lighting that shifts in tone throughout the day draw the eye and soften the mood.
