A house with Hidden Passageways
A natural base with carefully considered functionality
This two-storey home was designed for a family with two daughters, balancing modern living with everyday comfort. The foundation is a calm palette of earthy tones, muted greens and natural materials – primarily wood and veneers – which bring warmth throughout the interior. The ground floor forms an open-plan living space, where the lounge, kitchen and dining area flow seamlessly into one another.Storage plays a key role in this design. In several rooms, full-height bespoke cabinetry replaces sections of the walls, with integrated fronts concealing hidden entrances to adjoining spaces, allowing the layout to make the most of every available inch.

Maximising space was a clear priority. In the ground-floor wardrobe, the dressing area by the bedroom and the utility room, traditional walls were replaced entirely with built-in joinery. Entrances to these spaces are discreetly concealed within doors integrated into the cabinetry. In addition, the bathroom layout was reconfigured to accommodate both a bath and a shower, while a mezzanine level was introduced in the smaller children’s bedroom to create an additional floor.
“The project required a number of highly bespoke solutions – from concealed doorways within the joinery, to reworking the bathroom layout, and designing the mezzanine. One of the more demanding elements was the staircase, designed to appear as solid concrete, although it will in fact be constructed from wood and finished with microcement.”
